In this post, we explained the popular LPG storage tanks parameters and requirements for Underground LPG storage tanks design and installation for LPG storage, distribution and/or (gas) filling stations/ plants.
LPG (gas) storage tank is one of the main equipment of LPG distribution and filling stations. While some storage tanks are designs and installation are for Surface / Above-Ground, others are Underground LPG Storage Tanks.
The underground LPG storage tank is suitable for customers who have limited site area LPG storage, distribution or/and filling stations. The underground design can have the distance between the storage tank and the building, greatly utilize the land area, and save land costs for customers. At the same time, the overall appearance and coordination after installation is conducive to the layout and adjustment of the gas station on the ground.

Though the production process of both LPG tanks is the same. The main difference is the position of the tank valve and the surface paint of the tank body. The various valves of the underground LPG storage tank are concentrated in the manhole, which is convenient for maintenance during installation and use. The centralized design solves the installation and maintenance problems of buried storage tanks, and also facilitates regular maintenance by engineers.
The keys in all LPG Storage Tank Design and Installation:
- Applicable Design Construction Codes
- Design Pressure and Temperature
- Design Vacuum
- Materials of Construction
- Vessel Connections

For underground tank, in order to cope with the dark and humid underground environment, we have adopted three layers of paint protection for this product, and selected domestic first-class industrial paints. It prevents the corrosion of microorganisms and the adverse effects of moisture. At the same time, our storage tanks have perfect welding seam technology and flaw detection technology, which can ensure that the tank body will not leak during the service life, which will cause environmental pollution. Therefore, companies and states/ countries with environmental protection requirements can use our products with confidence.
It has not been long when NUPRC gave approval for installation of underground LPG storage tanks. This is for those who want their LPG storage tank(s) to be buried under the earth. The underground tanks has color code approve by NUPRC.
Requirements for the Design and Installation of Underground LPG storage tanks.
- The location underground LPG storage tank must be in accordance with the state Town Planners, Fire Service and LGA approval.
After the approval, the selected place will be wall round, it is safe from third parties and utilities like electricity poles and high-voltage power stations. The spacing must meet the specified requirements. Finally, the design and construction plan must be accepted and pass the inspection by NUPRC before construction will start. - The liquefied gas station includes several major areas: liquefied gas storage tank area, fire pool, filling room, lightning protection and anti-static equipment, etc. The reasonable layout of these equipment should not only take into account the safety distance, but more importantly It is convenient for users to use daily, and the loading, unloading and filling operation of the liquefied gas transport semi-trailer will be smooth in the future.
Good designs should accommodate the liquefied gas tanker to be able to turned around in the station without causing much unnecessary trouble to other filling station activities. - The foundation of the underground LPG tank should be well laid. The buried tank equipment needs to be placed on the basis of reinforced concrete. This will make the underground LPG Tank stable unlike what many users think that the dogged ground makes the tank stable.
Also, the storage tank must undergo pressure testing, do anti-corrosion and anti-static work. It is also good to pay attention about spray painting, first spray the primer, then spray the topcoat, then the anti-rust paint, layer by layer protection.
- The gas phase and liquid phase pipelines in the liquefied gas station are welded with seamless steel pipes. After they are all completed, they must undergo non-destructive testing and air tightness testing to ensure smooth operation. Gas stations with poor installation quality are prone to safety hazards in actual work.
